PLANTS
Among the botanicals used in skincare, few carry a reputation for skin repair as enduring as tamanu oil. Pressed from the nuts of the Calophyllum inophyllum tree, tamanu has long been valued across Southeast Asia and the Pacific for its ability to calm inflammation, support healing, and restore balance to stressed skin.
The oil itself is distinctive — deep green, aromatic, and rich in active compounds that interact closely with the skin. One of the most notable is calophyllolide, a bioactive molecule shown in recent studies to play an important role in calming inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, burns, acne, and wounds. Research suggests it works in part by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, including TNF-α, which play a central role in the skin’s inflammatory response. Tamanu oil has also demonstrated activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Propionibacterium granulosum, bacteria associated with acne breakouts. By helping reduce both bacterial presence and inflammatory signaling, tamanu may support a more balanced skin environment — resulting in calmer skin, fewer flare-ups, and a visible reduction in redness.

While tamanu is often discussed in relation to inflammation, its benefits extend far beyond breakout-prone skin. One of the oil’s most remarkable properties is its ability to support the skin’s natural repair processes.
Studies have shown that compounds within tamanu oil can stimulate the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) by as much as 350%. These molecules play a central role in the skin’s extracellular matrix, helping bind moisture, maintain collagen and elastin, and support the formation of new, healthy tissue. By supporting these processes, tamanu encourages the skin to repair and regenerate itself more effectively — strengthening the barrier and gradually softening the appearance of post-acne marks and scars. This regenerative activity also makes tamanu valuable for mature skin, where collagen production naturally declines and the skin’s repair processes slow over time, mainly due to UV exposure. By supporting hydration, collagen synthesis, and tissue renewal, tamanu helps maintain resilience and elasticity as the skin ages.
More Than One Way to Repair Skin
Inflammation, breakouts, and post-acne marks often share a common thread: disruption to the skin’s natural repair cycle. Ingredients that calm irritation while encouraging regeneration can help restore balance more effectively than those focused on a single mechanism alone.
Tamanu oil is particularly valued for this dual role. By helping reduce inflammatory signals while supporting collagen and tissue renewal, it allows the skin to rebuild strength — restoring resilience and encouraging a smoother, more even surface over time. Over time, this approach helps the skin move beyond cycles of irritation and repair toward a steadier state of balance.
From Coastal Forests to Skin
The tamanu used in our formulations is ethically and organically sourced from Vietnam, where the trees grow along tropical coastlines. Like many botanicals, tamanu works best not as a trace ingredient, but at meaningful concentrations. In our Face Oil Concentrate, Radiant Matter, tamanu oil makes up 16% of the formulation — a level far higher than typically found in skincare. At this concentration, the oil can fully express its calming and reparative qualities while working alongside complementary botanicals selected to support skin recovery.
